Miss McDermot's class
My first week of my voluntry work was with Miss McDermot's class 6, ages 7-8.
We started the morning off with independent reading, the children bring their own books from home and read for 20 minutes until the whole class had arrived at 9:00am.
They then moved on to their English lesson where they were learning about Narnia, their task was to draw a map of Narnia and label everything. They then broke off for assembly, followed by break time.
I helped the children with their maps making sure they stayed focused and giving them praise whenever i thought necessary.
During assembly i helped a group of children with a word game to improve their english skills.
After break time they continued with their maps until lunch time.
After lunch time they then moved on to R.E, where they were set a task about Islam. I helped by answering questions and handing out information sheets.
They continued with this until their next brak time.
After break time they continued with their R.E task and if they had any spare time left at the end, they then finished their Narnia maps.
Towards the end of the day i listened to a couple of the children read from their own independant reading books and i assessed them in their review books for their parents to see how well they are progressing.
I enjoyed my first day in class 6, i received a good understanding of how a lesson is structured and i thought it was a very rewarding atmosphere when helping the children.
I also asked some of the teaching assistants about which option would be best. Becoming a teacher or a teaching assistant?
All replied that being a teacher is the best option for the good pay and responsibilities.
